A Budapest mini adventure

Mildly energetic, takes an hour or two depending on your mood. Fantastic views at the end and a high "feel good" factor.

Start at Deak Ferenc, this feels like the spiritual centre of the city to me, you can dive into Vaci Utca and mainstream tourist shops, restaurants etc, or you can take a tram and go the opposite way.

First buy some water, there are some small supermarkets at Deak Ferenc where you can get a couple of bottles for less than 80p. Take the 47 or 49 tram from Deak Ferenc to the bottom of Gellert Hill. Get off at the first stop over the Szaba bridge by the Gellért Hotel and wind your way up the hill using the various footpaths through the trees to the statue and citadel at the top (1944 feet). Tip: all the paths eventually lead to the top, just keep going up and you will get there in the end.

When you get to the top have a look to see how much your water would cost there (allow yourself to feel smug)... I saw 480 HUFS versus the 129 HUFS I paid at Deak Ferenc. I nearly forgot, the view is outstanding and you will feel so virtuous, having got there under your own steam, that you will make unbearable company in the evening when you reminisce about the day to your fellow travellers.

Having made such a heroic journey you are entitled to sneer at the lazy lumps who came by hop-on, hop-off bus and didn't even get slightly breathless.

Tip: When you have finished your mini adventure, walk down the road to the bottom of the hill and catch the number 112 bus back to the centre of Budapest. Alight the bus at Astoria to connect into the metro system.
